What is Lion's Mane?
Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is a nootropic edible mushroom with benefits ranging from potent antioxidant/anti-carcinogenic properties to neuroprotective benefits. That is, in addition to boosting the immune system, Lion's Mane extract also keeps the brain healthy by increasing mental clarity and cognitive function by protecting brain cells.
Lion's Mane extracts are currently being researched as a potential treatment for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease patients because of it's neuroprotective properties. Animal studies showed that supplementing Lion's Mane extract in rats helped improve cognitive function and memory vs. rats that received no extracts or a placebo.
Lion's Mane vs. Disease
Although more research is necessary, some studies suggest Lion's Mane extract may slow or inhibit the growth of several types of cancers ranging from lung cancer to leukemia. According to a 2013 study, hot water Lion's Mane extract (the type used in NeuRoast's adaptogen blend) and microwaved 50% ethanol Lion's Mane extract killed cancer cells through apoptosis and inhibited metastasis of cancer cells to the lungs of rats by 66% and 69%, respectively. Dietary administration of these Lion's Mane extracts also reduced the formation of lung tumors by about 50% and 55%, respectively.
A study out of Japan showed that Lion's Mane extract improved blood circulation from the heart to the brain, potentially decreasing the risk of strokes and blood clots.
